After really looking at the scalation again, I'm thinking it could be some sort of Naja, though that is a really odd position for it to be in-almost like it was up against glass. that really illustrates the problem though. That old world elapid looks enough like a new world colubrid that anyone who didn't know any batter, upon seeing that ad, might assume that the baird's rat in their yard is deadly. perhaps better wording for the ad would have been "what do you do if you encounter a deadly snake" with a picture of an easily identifiable viper species.
