The plastic runners are fit to the top and bottom edges of the glass. They provide a smooth surface for the glass to slide on the metal track (especially over rivets), and they hugely reduce the change of chipping the glass when removing it from the track, setting it down, etc.

If you are ordering glass from a shop, make sure they bevel the top and bottom edges. I think it will cost more than $10, but I live in Los Angeles where nothing is only $10.
