Appendix I--Chinchilla spp. (Specimens of the domesticated form are not subject to the provisions of the Convention)--from the CITES database.
I think the number of nile monitors they are refering to are the number imported into the US, not the feral population.
At any rate, if this article were to slant any more, it would fall over.
