Residents in Cambridge, Ont. are wondering how an approximately two metre long snake ended up on the ice in the middle of the Grand River.



The dead snake was found Wednesday morning around 8:00 a.m. by a man walking near the Parkhill Dam.



Animal control officials say it was likely someone's pet and that was either released by its owner or it could have escaped from its home.



Markings indicate that the snake is a red tail boa constrictor.



On Thursday, firefighters used a special watercraft to remove the snake from the river for safety reasons.



Linda Fegan, communications director for the City of Cambridge, says "And we just to make sure that someone like a young child wouldn't venture out to take a look at the snake."



It's not a sight any passersby expected to see on a cool February day.



Local resident Stanley Bolger says "So you never know. This Cambridge, Galt, you know, things come of the blue."



Student Lauren Holmes says she's saddened by the sight, but "I'd never thought I'd see [a snake] in Cambridge, and it's exciting."
