Nile Monitor's mouth

My little (less than a foot) Nile Monitor has a jaw that seems to be slightly open all the time even though its mouth is closed. I know that means I have done something wrong, and it is a very common thing for stupid people to do, but I don't remember what it is that I have done wrong. What is it?
