If he won't stand still to be measured, you can get good measurements with "aerial" photo(s) on something like a grid of tiles w/ known (relatively precise) dimensions. You can look around on the web for software to then measure the length of that big yellow curve in the photo (I had an R script that did this - if I get it working again I'll let you know).
