Age and Sex

First of all. I bought a gecko about a month ago. I read alot about impaction and stuff like that. When coould i add some substratelike sand or bark. Also at what age could I consider getting another gecko to put in the cage. and how can I tell the sex? When I purchased the gecko it was rather small but do not know the actual age..
