I wonder if someday Mexico will open up to collection. I understand there was legitimate concerns for closing the border, back then all they knew about herps was that large quantities were being collected and sold, they didn't have much knowledge about abundance and they didn't have the resources to do alot of studies. My impression is that there was alot of herps being collected but not really enough collecters to make licensing fees pay off. These wildlife agencies want to make money too and herpers were seen as a bad investment with little return. I think the wildlife agencies saw that their best returns could be seen in the form of good publicity they would get from looking tough on collecting.



My hope is that someday they will see herps the same way they see game animals and sport fishing, as something they can put relatively low bag limits on and sell licenses for. I would like to collect mex mex, thayeri, Sinaloan's and Pueblan's and I would gladly pay $100-200 or so for an annual license that would allow me to collect a pair or two of each, much the same way TX and AZ allow.
