The species that was wiped out is acheta domestica. I have breeders of a different species, gryllus assimilis, which look sort of like the acheta but are much bigger. I got my starter stock from a friend who got his from Bassett's Cricket Ranch. They are also known as silent crickets as they don't sing very loud, a feature some may appreciate, but not me. I loved the song.
