with giving these 'defective' animals away as pets, what if that person decides to breed it, and then sell it's 'defective' offspring;

"Eh, where did you get that defective animal from?"

"Oh this guy? I got him for (whatever YOUR name is)". Reputation destroyed. Through no fault (kinda) of your own.
