Up until about 20 years ago, the majority of newspapers used a petroleum based ink. However, since then, virtually all have switched to a soy based ink which is completely non-toxic. Even back when the inks were petroleum based, I seriously doubt if there was enough of an exposure to petro-chemicals to cause any issues.
