I'm not positive on this but I think any stain will do as long as you let it dry and air out until there is no smell of the stain or any chemicals. I know for terrariums with the foam background you put silicone to stick dirt or w.e on it to give it the finish you want but you have to let it air out extremely well and make sure there is no smell of any chemicals or anything.
