The nile I kept for many years (15 or so) was quite feisty when young but mellowed quite a bit when he got up to the 5 to 6ft range. Not so much handleable or tame but not necessarily all that aggressive.

Niles are great display animals if you build a large enough proper enclosure for them. They are as tough as nails in captivity as far as I am concerned compared to alot of other monitors. But if you are looking for an animal you can handle you should have went with a bearded dragon or a leopard gecko, or better a dog. Don't mean to sound harsh with that last statement, it's just that is the plain truth.
