I looked into pit tags some time back. I think they are a great idea especially for people wanting to document lineage. When I looking into them the cost was ~$2 per tag and insertion is easily accomplished though some locals may require it to be done by a veterinarian.
The problem comes in developing a standard by which the tag numbers are recorded. Additionally readers are somewhat expensive. At less then a grand they aren't too expensive for someone who is going to use it routinely but its not an item most people are going to have in their tool box. ----- “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.” Emmerson
