I agree with the "dead rat versus infestation" policy as well. That is why I keep glue boards stationed around my room at all times. I check them regularly to prevent any glue board deaths, but I would rather find that it had died stuck to a glue board than it had chewed its way into the wall or duct work and died there. Ick.

The glue boards are nice because they are a standard defense I can have around the room at all times, is effective at catching the animals, and almost completely non-lethal. Snap traps, tip traps, etc might prevent an infestation, but you also lose your rodent :
