Yup you can use plain glycerin if you want. It gets icky pretty fast though, so you have to change it every other day.

I use polycrylamine or polymer water crystals. You can get them at craft shops in the candle department. They are the things that look like glass or ice that are used for air fresheners or candle holders. They seem expensive: $10 (cdn) for a little bag, but a tsp makes about a cup. You can make jugs and jugs with one bag. It's the same stuff used in the cricket water you find in pet stores.
