Thank you for contacting me in regard to the expansion in federal regulation over certain snake species. I would like to take this opportunity to address your concerns.



On January 23, 2012, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) published a final rule that would add four species of snakes, including the Burmese python, Northern and Southern African pythons, and yellow anaconda, to the list of injurious wildlife regulated under the Lacey Act (18 U.S.C. 42), making it illegal to import the snakes or transport them across state lines. It is important we strike an appropriate balance between the protection of our environment and natural resources, while at the same time not placing burdensome regulations on businesses that could undermine our nation's economic recovery. I will continue to monitor any further developments, and will remain mindful of your concerns should the Senate address this issue during the 112th Congress.
