I'm sorry for your loss, and glad you didn't quit. It is obvious from your posts that you really enjoy all of this.
But, I have to ask you to explain what happened with the t-stat? I can't hardly imagine either extreme of a failure causing death. If it quit, I wouldn't think the ambient would be that low, and if the t-stat stuck wide open, I would think they could move from the heat. Was it a t-stat that controlled a room heater?
I don't want to drag you through it again, but hopefully we can all learn a valuable lesson. I have already shut off all of my heat cables and flex watt and rely on ambient temps because of the recent fires. I don't like to do it this way and hope to go back to using the belly heat once I figure out how to use some electrical safety devices to prevent arcs and possible fires.
