Have you ever looked under rock after rock after rock and not found anything? I've done that quite a few times. Today I was walking on a popular hiking/biking trail and I saw this pretty big rock. I thought "What the hey, I'll lift that."

Keep in mind that this was in the Greater Cleveland area - not exactly the "Snake Capital" of the world. Under that rock were five snakes - all of them in shed. Three were Eastern Garters and two were Milks. Here's the larger one.

The smaller one looked like it was only a day or two away from shedding. They were the most attractive milks I've ever seen, but they're the first ones I've seen in the field this year, so I was pleased.

I'm going to check back in a few days. Maybe I'll be able to get some post-shed pics. Did you know that those things bite?
