Working on a budget back when morphs where much more expensive I was always on the lookout for possible het males. Everything takes me longer than it should but I’m very patient and appreciate the results when I finally get there. Was ecstatic last year when I produced pieds “only” 10 years into a project starting with possible het males and normal females. This week I hatched these caramels from a similar 12 year project.

I picked up a 66% chance het caramel male from Mark Hensler in 2000 that was one of a group of 3 produced by Tracy Barker in 1999 (maybe VPI's first caramel clutch?). I didn't produce possible possible het daughters until 2004. Those three 33% chance het caramel girls all produced this year bred to a known het male from Marshall Van Thorre and the last one produced this 1.2 group of caramels.

During these last 12 years I've come to find out about kinking in caramels (only kink I see is in the tip of the tail of the female to the right) and problems getting good eggs from homozygous females but I have to say they are way better looking in person than I thought they would be so I'm still stoked into my 2nd decade of this project. Thinking I'll try to breed a pair as these are also 25% chance het hypo, 25% chance het albino, and 16.5% chance het TSK axanthic and I can't resist that many possible het shots ...
