From what I have read roach eating and other bug eating contests are fairly common around Halloween, so I'm not sure how much of a deal that part of it is.

I read elsewhere (ball python forums) that some people were upset that people were upset. They claimed that this event shows our true colors as being less of a community and more of an industry because the first thought many people had was selfish (what will this do to us?) not more empathetic (somebody died, children lost a father, etc). Especially when it is pointed out that the person who perished must have been part of this so-called herp community- who else would eat roaches for a ball python?

It might, if anything, put into relief the differences within the herp group. Some people do seem much more interested in the industry side, and others seem more into the natural history side.
