Mr. Michael R. Goldbarg

Dear Michael:

Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts regarding invasive species legislation. It is good to hear from you.

I appreciate you making me aware of your opposition to H.R. 966, the Invasive Fish and Wildlife Prevention Act. As you know, this measure establishes an improved regulatory process for injurious wildlife to prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife and wild animal pathogens and parasites that are likely to cause harm. Currently, H.R. 966 has been referred to multiple House committees for legislative action.

When considering this legislation it is important to remember that while nonnative species can be a nuisance and have a great potential to cause damage, the United States has also greatly benefited from foreign species. For example, some are utilized as an important part of our trade and tourism industries and nonnative crops account for a large majority of our national food supply.

It is for this reason that I support a balanced approach toward ensuring that the management of nonnative species is performed in a manner that does not negatively affect our economic and ecological infrastructure nor put in place burdensome monitoring procedures that could be costly and unnecessary. Rest assured that as Congress continues to discuss measures concerning the proper way to handle invasive species, I will keep your thoughts firmly in mind.

Thank you again for contacting me. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely,

Duncan Hunter

Member of Congress
