I have only been coming to this site a short time, but have noticed such comments on cage size. Like, I tried a bigger cage and it made no difference or did not help.

This is also related to Choices, and that comment has also been make, I added choices and it made no difference, etc.

This subject is understood with varanids, as they simply resist small boxes. heck many even resist large boxes. They REQUIRE a wider set of choices. Or they simply die.

But like here, we(varanid keepers) get newbies all the time. And in most cases, they state their success in reptiles such as colubrids.

Back to the subject, A keeper must understand what larger cages can provide in order to make them useful. Simply put, a larger cage allows for more choices for the animal. Particularly if it has large doors.(easy to take things in and out)

That leads to what are choices. This is the problem. In most cases keepers provide the same choices they had in a smaller box more times, which is NOT more choices, its the same choice many times. Or the same choices(support) only in a larger box.
Again, thats not adding more choices. The key is adding more different choices and in most cases those choices are to extend what is offered in small cages. Not the same choices in a different larger box.

There are two major areas to address, physical and behavioral. Any questions?
