My rainbow boa exhales forcibly when she's annoyed. Mites are quite uncomfortable, so your snake is probably just in a bad mood. Also, sometimes breathing can become audible when the snake is about to shed.

I've noticed low humidity can also cause breathing problems in high humidity snakes, so you might want to make sure your levels are correct.
