i caught him in Bedford County, Virginia where i live. we're sort of in the western central part of the state. he was on some property where this guy raises chickens. there's lots of mice around, i guess because of the chicken feed. he was in a really grassy area near a stream where there's lots of boards and debris lying around. i've also found them under piles of roofing tin. i think they can also be found in forests, but be careful where you step because they blend in perfectly with dead leaves! i almost stepped on one that was in leaves when i was a teenager. if you're gonna be in Tennessee, watch for the Southern variety. they're quite a bit lighter in color than the Northerns. in the summer, you can often see them crossing roads after it rains. check those slopes, too. you might even see a Timber rattler if there are rocks around. good luck and be careful!
