It sounds like it may be time to retrain your kitty. Try confining him to one room (bathroom works well for most). Only let him out when you are able to supervise him.

You need to clean the area with Natures Miracle. It will help take the smell out of your carpet and discourage him from going there.

Also, some cats like to use two different boxes. One to urinate in other to poo in. You may want to try that.
