He keeps going up to the kitchen cupboards, closed doors, and even toilets - and then he'll just meow in a very sad tone. It really seems as though he expects a certain reaction from me.

Get him some treats like Perfection.Sounds like to me hes been spoiled and he knows what he wants and how to get it.Time will take care of things like this.
