There is probably nothing harmful in using Aspen shaving for kitty litter, although they might not work as well. Cats instinctively like sandy soils for their elimination and clay is lighter and more absorbant than sand, but still mimics the texture enough that cats crave. I don't think there was true kitty litter until about 50 years ago - before people really did use sand or let the cats go outside.
