IF he cks out ok at the vets, try a scat mat on the couch for a week or two, also you can try a carpet runner the length of your couch as a cheaper alternative, just turn it knubby side up. I would confine him to retrain to the litterbox first, then use the above deterrants once he is allowed to roam again.
