I Need Grooming Advice

I have a long hair senior cat. We never had to really brush her out when she was younger because she never got matted. Now since she is 10 it seems like her fur get more matted and we almost have to brush her out daily. Is this normal for older cats? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
