Distemper/Upper resp vaccine

Is it necessary for a kitten to have a follow-up distemper/Upper resp vaccine? And what is the danger of giving a kitten a rabies vaccine? My kitten is 5 months old, but only 2.5 lbs. I just got him from the pound.
