Getting them spayed/neutered may help with the litterbox problem. In any event, a vet check is a good idea when any cat has a behavior change. It is fine for the female to be spayed without having a heat or a litter of kittens. She will be happier and healthier and so will you as dealing with a female cat in heat can be nerve-wracking.
