cats and puking

iv almost always lived with cats and now i own my very own cat. i guess i just got use to cats always throwing up, there was always cat puke to clean up whether it was food, hair balls, liquid or whatever. i havnt even had my kittne for a week and hes thrown up already. why exactly do cats throw up so much? is there any thing i can give my kitten so it doesnt happen often?
