GIVE YOURSELF SOME TIME You can’t control the college’s decision, which won’t change. So, it’s important that you do what any sagacious person would do: you move on. Give yourself some time to sulk. Shut yourself since in such moments everyone needs some time alone. Most people just need lots of Nutella and Netflix to recover, while some only need the warmth of their parent’s bosom. They can actually make you feel back on track. You must realize that a college rejection is just like a breakup, you shouldn’t waste your time brooding over it because that is exactly what people would expect from you. Embrace it and try to realize that it’s short-term, and move on. DEALING WITH ANGER Often students get angry with the college they were rejected by, and start bad mouthing about it. They feel that all those who got selected probably had a connection with the college. There is no need for you to burn in anger over something that you cannot change. It will be more fruitful if you rather try your luck elsewhere or hit a gym if you prefer since Lifting weights and pounding fists at the punching bag help release the anger. EVALUATE YOUR REJECTION Most people would think it downright awkward to make a list of pros and cons of being rejected. However, it helps. Making a list of pros and cons and then weighing it might help you look on the bright side. APPLY TO OTHER COLLEGES I know you have just learned that you have failed to achieve what you planned for almost a year. I also know that it is a little early for you to start over again. But, you need to realize that if you waste your time on crying, you may regret it. Better start making a list of all those colleges that you had applied. A lot of students apply at a number of colleges, besides the one they actually want to go to. This way, if they get rejected, they have a contingency plan. The good thing is that if you go to a less competitive college, you can always choose to transfer to a more competitive college later. Some students have planned it beforehand. Although I would not advise anyone to apply simply to get transferred, if you are not comfortable with going to a college, then you always have an option. For instance, President Obama was a transfer student, who moved from Occidental in Los Angeles to New York City to finish college at Columbia. BONUS TIP THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES The number of possibilities for someone, especially for young 18-year-olds, is limitless. There are thousands of things that you can do. Imagine, you have one whole summer, three months. You can once again sit down to apply to colleges that you didn’t even think of earlier. You can also take a gap year, and during this time you can do some voluntary work. This will help you realize your true potential, and one year later you will be more mature and wise. One year would help you to rethink your college preferences. Remember, this is not the end of the world since rejection is just part of life. In life, you will probably be rejected many times. So, don’t give up yet because there are more opportunities lying ahead for the taking. Elbert Archer is a final year student; he loves to write blogs and articles.
