Last night I accidently broke the egg of a spider gecko. It has been incubating for 73 days. There was a tiny bit of blood but the embryo is fully formed. It has part of the yolk sac still attached. I removed it from the shell to find the source of blood so I now have it on gauze in a high humidity container in the incubator. The problem is that there is a part of the yolk sac that has a small hole. The sac has dried or "closed up" at the hole but I think infection will most likely happen if it hasn't gotten in there already. I don't know if infections are common or if it usually happens in non-sterile environments (like on bedding of some sort). Right now the baby is in its membrane (on gauze) in a film container and this film container is inside a small, closed deli cup with wet filter floss. As of this morning is was wiggly and alive but I won't be home again to see it until 10 hours later.

In your opinion, is this gecko most likely going to die? I could always ask a vet remove the yolk sac to prevent infection but I don't know if this is a real solution.

If the baby was fully intact in the membrane I wouldn't worry too much but the ruptured sac seem like really bad news.
