Your absolutely right, the negative space is part of (an important part) as the composition has to have balance. I agree that the detail could be just as easily removed. I want to tighten to put more focus on the frog as I lead in and out of the image because the frog is "proposed" as a frog pic. contestant, thus I want to be as tight as I can and yet keep the supporing elements submissive.(needless to say there's a limit)
