I just use the top that came with the rubbermaid container. I cut a large opening and use the hardware cloth to cover it. So far I haven't had any problems with rats or mice chewing through the containers. I had mice for over 6 months now and rats about a month. I think rats or mice may chew their way out due to boredom, especially rats. Thus it is always good to spend a little extra money to provide them things to play with.
As for Gravid...from my personal experience, gravid is commonly used to refer to pregnant reptiles and pregnant is referred to mammals or live bearing animals. I have no clue what hospitals use but none that I have ever been in use Gravid for pregnant humans. Perhaps you have it there is due to living closer to Latin American. I live in Canada, and other than French, English is the dominant language.
The fact Gravid is latin for pregnant doesn't surprise me. Most of English consist of words from another language or derived from another language. English is the 'mutt' of languages.
