heat tape size?

Would the three or four inch heat tape be ok for heating 28qt or larger sterilie or rubbermaid tubs in a rach. I this moment I am leading towards the 4" lower wattage. I feel this will bne sufficient since I live in san diego and temps. don't vary or drop to much. I would also be using a dimmer switch as well.
