If you just got the snake, I would leave it alone for a few days to a week before picking it up. They can be skittish and nervous when in their new home for awhile. However, after the initial time to let it settle in, it will get used to handling pretty quick. When you pick them up, gently pick them up away from their heads, as most snakes are head shy. Mine tries to move away when I pick him up but once he is in my hands, he calms down quickly and starts exploring my hands, arms, body and anything else it can get to without falling.
