Ok, I had to disinfect everything, replace sand (I actually am going to replace it with shelf liner... I ended up being 3-4" short from being able to totally cover the tank though, figures. I have to get more tomorrow, hope they have the same pattern.), etc. because he just finished his pinworm treatment. I can't see how some people can do this every day, and saw just how hard major rescuers (Those who keep large numbers of rescues, especially ones with problems that require lots of cleaning) jobs can be. I have this nice piece of wood that fits my tank perfectly for a basking spot, and the top reaches just the right location to be 105(F), so I don't want to trash it. I soaked it in 5-10% bleach for 30 minutes, took it out of the soaking bin, put it in the sink and rinsed it for a long time. I took it out, dried it off, rinsed again, dried it off, let it air dry for a little while, then put it in the oven for 10 minutes @ 325(F). I did the same with one of those half-logs. I can still smell the bleach in the piece of wood... It has very fine cracks, so I'm thinking it (the bleach residue) might be trapped in here. (I live in Northeastern Massachusetts, inland, so you can get an idea of the types of woods. Pine, oak, etc --- I found it on the ground nearly stripped of almost all bark, so I couldn't ID what it came from.) Is it a total loss? If so, can anyone suggest a good wood to construct a basking spot from? One that can survive a good bleaching. My half-log has another problem... I can see the residue, but it won't come off. It's on the pieces of the bark on the top side, but rinsing doesn't help, I baked that too. Total loss? I never knew I'd end up with this much lost. ----- ---
