Keeping crickets outside

I live in Southern California and I am keeping about a weeks worth of crickets for a bearded dragon in a tank in my apartment. Crickets are stinky little critters and I need to know if I can keep them outside in 55f weather at night in a closet next to a water heater. That should keep them warm and they should get plenty of light during the day through vents in the door. Does this sound ok? My apartment is just too small for that much stink.
