? re: new Mali's tail

I was given a mature Mali, I think a male, but keep forgetting to check underneath! He seems in good health, but his tail is lacking most of its spines! He has smooth whorls with a couple of spikes here and there, but not much. I assume he was wild caught, but has been in captivity for a while, he is very tame. He still has his toes, though some of the nails are deformed, especially on just one side.

Any theories on what could have happened to his tail?

I'll post pics this weekend, when I can catch him awake! By the time I get home from work he is sleeping and won't come out for anything! I don't want to upset him too much so soon!
