Should I be using Vermiculite?!

My breeder male SHCT Leo had a 'protrusion' of vermiculite stuck at the edge of his vent. I put him in a bowl of warm wet kleenex and let him soak. When I pulled at the vermiculite it came out with some green puss. His vent was pretty red, but he seems alright. Is vermiculite the wisest thing to be using in my moist hides????
