impaction question

I haven't noticed my mali eating for the past few days, thats not to say he hasn't, but I'm not sure. He's still very active, digging and digging in this new soil mixture. My only concern is that when he is digging he spays dirt all over his tank, and some of it lands in his food dish. I try and keep it clean, but invariably he must be getting atleast a small amount of dirt in his mouth. So I would just like to know what the signs are of impaction, and if there is anyway I can check to see if he is.
