Big Apple Herp sells some excellent bulb guards, so no worries about exposed bulbs.



Anyway, I would put the heat tape under the floor of each compartment, and if that means you need to put it on the ceiling of the lower cage (if the ceiling is the under-floor of the top compartment)then so be it. The heat will go through the melamine.



Heat tape inside the cage on the floor is a real pain to deal with. I suppose you could cover it with expanded PVC or some ceramic tiles, but it is still not the ideal situation with snakes. If the cages are large you could use heat panels.
