If only life (and economic systems) were so fair! However, the situation you are describing far exceeds the status of “hobby.” These “investments” are better termed “speculation.” And just like with the stock market or any other speculative use of resources, anyone who would have “ALL their capital-worth” tied up in one such “investment” could probably use some financial counseling. And should also be prepared to lose every penny.
Maintaining price points is surely to be desired. But in the scenario you just described, having a second job and a working spouse are probably more important.
