if your really trying to get a ligthing effect and not trying to be a smart@$$.....set up 3 types of light. Blend those together to manipulate shadows....highlight the areas with the light you want show. There should be a contrasting type thing going on with the shadowed areas and lighted areas. If your trying to get a snake to look brighter...put it on a different backround.
