Used to be by color, but there are many mimics now. Doug Dix showed me on yearlings, if you hold them upside down and gently pull their tail toward their back, just enough to show the bulges on the tail below the vent, males have two straight bulges, like the side of an H without the cross bar. Females have an upside down V, with the open end toward the vent.
Hard to tell sometimes with just one animal and you are not used to doing this!
