If you want your rack to run longways with the wall, i.e. "sideways" rack, so that it does not stick far out into the room, you can still have the long heat gradient.



I don't have a picture to show you but what you would do is build your rack as if you were going to run the heat tape the long way across the back but instead, put your heat tape at just one end, running from front to back on each level.



Then your hot end will be on the left, lets say and your cool end will be all the way over to the right. I hope that makes sense. If not, I can draw out a diagram.
