We use the Kodak DX4900. It's macro view and additional lenses you can use really allow you to capture detailed close ups.

We used the above picture on our banner which is 15' long to give you a perspective on the size we blew the head up. There's almost no pixelation at that size.

A good software package helps

Also you'll need to learn about lighting. That is what makes or breaks a great photo (of anything).
